I have been trying to find a "default" xorg.conf file for weeks, as Fedora Core 9 is so stupid to configure out the default installation to work with nForce610i/GeForce 7050 graphic card. I installed Ubuntu 8.04 today without any problem with the graphic card. Moreover, the first time I logged in, Ubuntu prompt me to update the driver automatically. If you are looking for a Linux distribution, Ubuntu is the best available distro in the market now (of course--free!).

This might be a solution to my personal wiki web project. I have looked into MediaWiki. Although privately configure Mediawiki for personal use is possible, it is not quite simple and strait forward to do. I hope PmWiki might provide me with a more DIY type wiki configuration without having to spend several hours learning how to use it.

Internet Scam!!!!!!!
Internet scam is everywhere. Although they may be a legal company, how they operate CANNOT be considered morally right!!!!!!!!!!! Look at this one for example. http://tinyurl.com/5np8sb
Tigerdirect is an online store which has been in business for a long time for computer products. I consider it as trustable. However, I might have to reconsider it from now on because how they choose to partner with other company. After you finish purchasing, it will lead you right to claim your reward (figure above).
If you carefully read their lengthy description, you will see that you will have to pay for membership fee next month. They give you first month free trial, and charge you the next month automatically. This makes their company legal. The marketing plan is absolute is considered EVIL in my opinion.

This did not bother me that much, but it does bother me now.
You can't trust the TRUSTe
My friend Paul always says that all businesses are evil. Although I am not quite agree with him, I think it is true in this case. This is not the only company that does this kind of thing. There are a lot more out there. You just have to be careful, I guess. That is the only thing I can tell you. Buy.com does have this same thing, but may be a different company.
Reservation Rewards: "Contact Us
Your comments are important to us.
Please let us know what we can do to serve you better.
The only good thing about this company seem to be they allow us to cancel the membership online, which I did instantly after log-in. They are probably not totally evil. It is just business. No hard felling!
This is what they said on the customer service page.

US genomics leader bows out from institute : Nature News
"Francis Collins, the geneticist who led the US National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) in Bethesda, Maryland, through the completion of the Human Genome Project and the dawn of the personal genomics era, has announced that he will leave his post on 1 August."
So what will he do?
"[He] was leaving the NHGRI to explore posts “that would be very difficult to consider or discuss or pursue while continuing in my role as a federal employee”.
"Collins also says that he would like to write a book about personal genomics for the public."
Umm, sounds like a great way to promote that "personal genomics" idea.
Some people also said he will resume his ownership for a genomic company he put his shares on hold during his position at NHGRI. That's quite obvious, isn't it? Who would like to be a poor scientists if you have other choices?

It was quite surprising to me to see Science published GWAS result for diabetes one after another. After reading the detail, these seems to be what make the difference.
1. In addition to the genotyped SNPs, HapMap imputation of ungenotyped SNPs seem to be on every GWAS todo list, right now -> they, however, didn't find anything new, which was not very surprising if they genotyping platform had a well-coverage of HapMap. All the tag SNPs should be there or at least were tagged with some SNPs. Doing imputation which uses info from genotyped SNPs wouldn't give much more information about untyped SNPs in this case.
2. Replication: another must do list for any good journal. Of course, unless you replicated the result. Your paper is probably going to a trash bin. Not to mention that your result have to survive genome-wide significant level (5x10-8) to be interesting. (French DESIR cohort, Northern Finland Birth Cohort,
3. They were not just looking at FPG, but also all the possible intermediate phenotypes for DM e.g. HOMA-Index for insulin secretion. It was quite upset to see no functional study result but only an extensive discussion of the gene function in glucose homeostasis, although from skimming through the text, it seems like they had a result from functional study of the gene in detail. So, I think if you are lucky enough to find a gene that already has been studied, you will have something more to discuss, and you will also can test for those intermediate phenotypes in your study population as they did in this paper.

Long-awaited electric sports car rolls out - CNN.com
"After several years of development, the Roadster -- with sleek lines like a Ferrari or Porsche and a sticker price of $109,000"
Umm, what reasoning do you have to use to buy this car? It costs over 100k, and the battery life can last for only 100,000 miles. A dollar per mile is probably not as bad as it sounds, but that means on average you pay 20,000$/year to drive this carbon-fiber car! With a fully-charged battery, you can drive 225 miles. Then, you will have to recharge it again for 3.5h before you can drive another 225miles.
What will happen next after the battery dies out? Do you have to throw the car away? What will you do with tons of Lithium ion battery? Will we end up building anther hazard waste and dump it somewhere like "DEVELOPING COUNTRIES"?

Building a web site
I am probably crazy, but this is what I did for the past few months.
I wanted to learn PHP, another computer language that can process html--a language for building web site. HP provided a free online lesson on their web site, and I joined their lesson. I didn't spend much time reading and practicing the exercises in their lessons. I just downloaded a bunch of the lessons and worked on my own pace. The class finished, but I am still on my first lesson.
So, the requirement for the class is that you have your own server, or hosting service that support PHP, and SQL database. They recommended a host called FastDomain. That was how my story started. So, I subscribe for the hosting service. At first, I think it was a pain in the neck. I tried to install Wordpress, and MediaWiki on my web site. However, I couldn't even setup a database in mySQL. Looking back, I was just stupid. Everything is just right there in front of me.
A few months passed by, I tried again last week. This time, I succeeded. I am probably getting more clever, or getting high! So now, I have Wordpress, phpBB3, Drupal, and Mediawiki running on my web site. I am still keep probing. I want to find something stable and easy to manage. Something I don't have to spend much time to learn how to.
My friend recommends me to go to http://www.opensourcecms.com (Thanks krub P'Tom). It is probably the best place to start. Their web site is actually looking good! They use PHP-Fusion.
Look how many people are accessing the website! A lot!!!
I think I am going proceed with PHP-Fusion! I also want to try the perl-based CMS, too. Hope it will help me to improve my Perl Programming Skill.

Russian bomber buzzes U.S. aircraft carrier - CNN.com
* Story Highlights
* Russia's Defense Ministry says there was no violation of flight regulations
* One bomber twice flew about 2,000 feet over USS Nimitz deck, U.S. military says
* U.S. Defense officials say four F/A-18A fighter jets from the Nimitz were in the air
* Japanese officials tell AP one of the planes violated their country's airspace"

Dietary Intake and the Development of the Metabolic Syndrome: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study -- Lutsey et al. 117 (6): 754 -- Circulation
Wow, as an epidemiologist, maybe I should think about alternative explanation, or read into more detail first about why diet soda would be adversely associated with incident metabolic syndrome. Well, I am kind of lazy now. I don't want to take too much time reading. Maybe I just stop drinking diet soda and all kinds of soda. I have never bought soda that often before I came to the US. After a year, life changed! Well, the vending machine just moved closer, or to be more accurate, I moved closer to the vending machine! I have been starting drinking diet soda, and adding Splenda to my coffee for about 6 months. I have just noticed myself recently that I am not satisfied with what I eat. Although I am still full, I still want to eat more and more. Something must be wrong. Umm, maybe that is what biases me now. I am just blaming it on diet soda, instead of blaming myself for not working, watching lots of TV, and sleeping all the time.
By the way, the study was published in Circulation, one of the most prestigious journal. The study populaion came from a well-known prospective cohort for cardiovascular disease. The authors are also from one of the best school of public health in the world. I think I will be just waiting for responses and commentary.

Sexist vs Racist! If I could vote for president, it would be Obama vs. Clinton. Forget McCain!
Primary election hasn't ended yet, but it looks like Clinton will win. At the moment the number of pledged delegates are 625 vs 624 for Clinton and Obama, respectively. Somehow, there are "Superdelegates" for the democrate party! What the $#@!!@#$ Well, if Clinton were to be nominated, I would have to vote for McCain! Am I a sexist? Probably not, but I'd rather not vote for Clinton even if I could.
The following are standard definitions of snow types and their associated abbreviations.
Powder-PDR: Cold, new, loose, fluffy, flaky and dry snow which has not been compacted.
Packed Powder-PP: Powder snow, either natural or machine made, that has been packed down by skier traffic or grooming machines. The snow is no longer fluffy, but is not so extremely compacted that it is hard.
Hard Pack-HP: When natural or machine made snow becomes very firmly packed. The snow has never melted and re-crystallized, but it's been tightly compressed through grooming and continuous wind exposure. You can plant a pole in hard packed snow, but it takes more effort than packed powder.
Machine Groomed Snow-MGS: Loose granular snow that has been repeatedly groomed by power tillers so that the texture is halfway between LSGR & PP. Some of the snow is granular & has been so pulverized that the crystals are like powder sugar. It's neither LSGR or PP.
Wet Snow-WETSN: Powder or packed powder snow that has become moist due to a thaw or rainfall, or snow which was moist when it fell.
Wet packed Snow-WPS: Natural or machine made snow that has been previously packed and becomes wet usually because of rainfall.
Loose Granular-LSGR: This surface results after powder or packed powder thaws, then refreezes and recrystalizes, or from an accumulation of sleet. This is also created by machine grooming of frozen or icy snow.
Frozen Granular-FRGR: This is undoubtedly the most misunderstood surface condition in ski reporting. It is defined as a hard surface of old snow formed by granules freezing together after rain or warm temperatures. Frozen granular will support a ski pole stuck into its surface while ice will chip away and not support a pole.
Wet Granular-WETGR: Loose or frozen granular snow which becomes wet after rainfall or high temperatures.
Icy-ICE: Not to be confused with frozen granular, ice is a hard, glazed surface created either by freezing rain, ground water seeping up into the snow and freezing or by the rapid freezing of snow saturated with water from rain or melting. Ice will chip away and not support a ski pole when stuck into it.
Variable Conditions-VC: When no primary surface (70%) can be determined, variable conditions describe a range of surfaces that a skier may encounter. Parts of trails can be Loose Granular, partly Packed Powder, and parts Frozen Granular, for example.
Corn Snow-CORN: Usually found in the spring, Corn Snow is characterized by large, loose granules during the day, which freeze together at night, then warm up again and loosen during the day.
Spring Conditions-SC: This is the spring version of Variable Conditions. It is used when no one surface can describe 70% or more of the terrain open for skiers.
Windblown Snow-WBLN: Powder or granular snow which has been blown by wind into forming a base.

The Italian National Survey for Prader-Willi syndr...[Am J Med Genet A. 2008] - PubMed Result
A national survey for Prader-Willi Syndrome could find a place for publication in a decent journal. Thinking about developing countries' national survey, who will care about what is happening. The result is of no use for anywhere in the world. What will make the paper interesting seems not to be the epidemiology part. Unless their own population care about what is going on. Why will we have such research going on? Will I be able to find anything to work on? Poor me!!!

Quite surprising how ancient aboriginal Taiwanese had moved that far across the ocean to New Guinea, an island in the south, without landing on the mainland! Where were they from? Why are there any trace of their originator left even in mainland China? Did the Chinese population wipe them out in the past? Hence, no one left till now. Maybe the current population size is so small that it is just a sample size issue that makes this population un-traceable!

Are you ready to know your own genome? What does it compose of? Do you need to really know?
Now you can get 500k SNPs plus 300k CNVs, 169 mtDNA, etc, for less than 1,000$.
Well why would you like to invest that much money to know what is in your genome. Then, what can you do about it, though.
deCODEme: "For only $985, we scan over one million variants in your genome"
23andme: "Unlock the secrets of your own DNA. Today" only 999$
"For genomic profiling to become valid and useful, well designed epidemiologic studies and thorough clinical evaluations of recommended interventions based on genotype are required." [Genomic profiling to promote a healthy lifestyle: not ready for prime time - Nature Genetics]
Can you tell instantly without thinking what kind of food is in the picture? I think everyone can since Japanese food is every popular and you can find it any where in the world. Yeah, I think so. Any city I have been to has at least one Japanese restuarant. Even you do not like it, I think you should have seen hot it looks like if you are not an idiot. Well, I have been asked though whether the food in the picture is Thai food. Yep, what kind of a person asked that question? Is he an idiot? I am not sure, probably not, since he works for the US National Security guarding the border at Newark Internation Airport. But he obviously asked, "Is this Thai food?". Are you stupid? Do you never have any Thai or Japanese food, or at least saw it in the pictures? Damned, you are probably really stupid! So is the whole system!

careers & recruitment : global science career opportunities in different disciplines : Naturejobs
Here's a short quote from Naturejobs:
"In the small community of statistical genetics, the informal network is key. Skol was one of its beneficiaries. He did his PhD with biostatistician Michael Boehnke at the Center for Statistical Genetics at Michigan State University. As with all his students, Boehnke sent an e-mail to colleagues to let them know he had a student ready to leave. 'There are many more positions than are even advertised in journals,' says Boehnke."
Wish my boss will do the same thing when I graduate, too. I still wonder where I will end up after my PhD before going back home :(
