Detroit mayor apologizes to supporters, says he will not resign - CNN.com

Detroit mayor apologizes to supporters, says he will not resign - CNN.com: "Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick offered an abject apology to his constituents Wednesday, but remained adamant that he would not resign following a newspaper report that he exchanged romantic text messages with his chief of staff."

This is probably the best reason why we shoul avoid love in our work place :(

"The seven-year itch"

It's call sabbaticals, meaning a journey to find the meaning of your life. In academia, it is the meaning of your work.
That is probably why you should use it wisely. In Thailand, however, sabbatical is not once every seven-year, but once in a life-time!

Stupid Forward Mail Question

: ลองดูกัน เผื่อจะได้ไม่เครียด (เปิดได้จริงครับ ใครคิดได้ภายใน 10 นาที ถือว่าIQ เกิน180) -> Translation: If you can solve this problem in 10 minutes, you probably have an IQ over 180. (Well, I don't think that's true unless you are a 1st grader!

: How good are you in problem solving
: -There is a bus with 7 Girls
: -Each girl carries 7 bags
: -Inside each bag there is 7 cats
: -Every cat has 7 kittens
: -All cats have 4 legs each
: Question : How many legs are in the bus?

Newly identified loci that influence lipid concentrations and risk of coronary artery disease : Article : Nature Genetics

Newly identified loci that influence lipid concentrations and risk of coronary artery disease : Article : Nature Genetics: "Newly identified loci that influence lipid concentrations and risk of coronary artery disease"

Is there still a room to improve the knowledge about this issue a genetic epidemiologist can do? I doubt it, unless you come out with a very clever twist or new statistical technique. :(

Statistics

Statistics: "Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics — 2008 Update"

Finally found it after several hours of PubMed. Should think about looking at some of these websites before! Same thing for most other disease if you want to find an update statistics, I think. That will save a lot of time if you know where you can find it.

The Italian National Survey for Prader-Willi syndr...[Am J Med Genet A. 2008] - PubMed Result

The Italian National Survey for Prader-Willi syndr...[Am J Med Genet A. 2008] - PubMed Result: "The Italian National Survey for Prader-Willi syndrome: An epidemiologic study."

A national survey for Prader-Willi Syndrome could find a place for publication in a decent journal. Thinking about developing countries' national survey, who will care about what is happening. The result is of no use for anywhere in the world. What will make the paper interesting seems not to be the epidemiology part. Unless their own population care about what is going on. Why will we have such research going on? Will I be able to find anything to work on? Poor me!!!

EVOLUTIONARY GENETICS: Polynesians Took the Express Train Through Melanesia to the Pacific -- Holden 319 (5861): 270b -- Science

Without a trace?:
EVOLUTIONARY GENETICS: Polynesians Took the Express Train Through Melanesia to the Pacific -- Holden 319 (5861): 270b -- Science
: "Polynesians Took the Express Train Through Melanesia to the Pacific"

Quite surprising how ancient aboriginal Taiwanese had moved that far across the ocean to New Guinea, an island in the south, without landing on the mainland! Where were they from? Why are there any trace of their originator left even in mainland China? Did the Chinese population wipe them out in the past? Hence, no one left till now. Maybe the current population size is so small that it is just a sample size issue that makes this population un-traceable!

Letting the Genome out of the Bottle — Will We Get Our Wish?
Are you ready to know your own genome? What does it compose of? Do you need to really know?

Now you can get 500k SNPs plus 300k CNVs, 169 mtDNA, etc, for less than 1,000$.
Well why would you like to invest that much money to know what is in your genome. Then, what can you do about it, though.

deCODEme: "For only $985, we scan over one million variants in your genome"
23andme: "Unlock the secrets of your own DNA. Today" only 999$

"For genomic profiling to become valid and useful, well designed epidemiologic studies and thorough clinical evaluations of recommended interventions based on genotype are required." [Genomic profiling to promote a healthy lifestyle: not ready for prime time - Nature Genetics]
Can you tell instantly without thinking what kind of food is in the picture? I think everyone can since Japanese food is every popular and you can find it any where in the world. Yeah, I think so. Any city I have been to has at least one Japanese restuarant. Even you do not like it, I think you should have seen hot it looks like if you are not an idiot. Well, I have been asked though whether the food in the picture is Thai food. Yep, what kind of a person asked that question? Is he an idiot? I am not sure, probably not, since he works for the US National Security guarding the border at Newark Internation Airport. But he obviously asked, "Is this Thai food?". Are you stupid? Do you never have any Thai or Japanese food, or at least saw it in the pictures? Damned, you are probably really stupid! So is the whole system!

careers & recruitment : global science career opportunities in different disciplines : Naturejobs

Can you imagine how easy a statistical geneticist can find a job?:
Here's a short quote from Naturejobs:

"In the small community of statistical genetics, the informal network is key. Skol was one of its beneficiaries. He did his PhD with biostatistician Michael Boehnke at the Center for Statistical Genetics at Michigan State University. As with all his students, Boehnke sent an e-mail to colleagues to let them know he had a student ready to leave. 'There are many more positions than are even advertised in journals,' says Boehnke."

Wish my boss will do the same thing when I graduate, too. I still wonder where I will end up after my PhD before going back home :(
