Google ventures into health records biz - CNN.com

Google ventures into health records biz - CNN.com: "SAN FRANCISCO, California (AP) -- Google Inc. will begin storing the medical records of a few thousand people as it tests a long-awaited health service that's likely to raise more concerns about the volume of sensitive information entrusted to the Internet search leader.

Google will test a new service that will allow the Internet search leader to store patients' medical records.

The pilot project to be announced Thursday will involve 1,500 to 10,000 patients at the Cleveland Clinic who volunteered to an electronic transfer of their personal health records so they can be retrieved through Google's new service, which won't be open to the general public."

Hmm. Does not sound save, does it?

Building a web site

I am probably crazy, but this is what I did for the past few months.
I wanted to learn PHP, another computer language that can process html--a language for building web site. HP provided a free online lesson on their web site, and I joined their lesson. I didn't spend much time reading and practicing the exercises in their lessons. I just downloaded a bunch of the lessons and worked on my own pace. The class finished, but I am still on my first lesson.

So, the requirement for the class is that you have your own server, or hosting service that support PHP, and SQL database. They recommended a host called FastDomain. That was how my story started. So, I subscribe for the hosting service. At first, I think it was a pain in the neck. I tried to install Wordpress, and MediaWiki on my web site. However, I couldn't even setup a database in mySQL. Looking back, I was just stupid. Everything is just right there in front of me.

A few months passed by, I tried again last week. This time, I succeeded. I am probably getting more clever, or getting high! So now, I have Wordpress, phpBB3, Drupal, and Mediawiki running on my web site. I am still keep probing. I want to find something stable and easy to manage. Something I don't have to spend much time to learn how to.

My friend recommends me to go to http://www.opensourcecms.com (Thanks krub P'Tom). It is probably the best place to start. Their web site is actually looking good! They use PHP-Fusion.

Look how many people are accessing the website! A lot!!!

I think I am going proceed with PHP-Fusion! I also want to try the perl-based CMS, too. Hope it will help me to improve my Perl Programming Skill.

Russian bomber buzzes U.S. aircraft carrier - CNN.com

Russian bomber buzzes U.S. aircraft carrier - CNN.com: "Russian bomber buzzes U.S. aircraft carrier

* Story Highlights
* Russia's Defense Ministry says there was no violation of flight regulations
* One bomber twice flew about 2,000 feet over USS Nimitz deck, U.S. military says
* U.S. Defense officials say four F/A-18A fighter jets from the Nimitz were in the air
* Japanese officials tell AP one of the planes violated their country's airspace"

It looks like the US is running out of reason to invade Iraq. So now, they are finding another reason to start a new cold war with Russian again! Good luck with McCain!

Dietary Intake and the Development of the Metabolic Syndrome: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study -- Lutsey et al. 117 (6): 754 -- Circulation

Dietary Intake and the Development of the Metabolic Syndrome: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study -- Lutsey et al. 117 (6): 754 -- Circulation: "analysis of individual food groups revealed that meat (Ptrend<0.001), fried foods (Ptrend=0.02), and diet soda (Ptrend< 0.001) also were adversely associated with incident Metabolic Syndrome"

Wow, as an epidemiologist, maybe I should think about alternative explanation, or read into more detail first about why diet soda would be adversely associated with incident metabolic syndrome. Well, I am kind of lazy now. I don't want to take too much time reading. Maybe I just stop drinking diet soda and all kinds of soda. I have never bought soda that often before I came to the US. After a year, life changed! Well, the vending machine just moved closer, or to be more accurate, I moved closer to the vending machine! I have been starting drinking diet soda, and adding Splenda to my coffee for about 6 months. I have just noticed myself recently that I am not satisfied with what I eat. Although I am still full, I still want to eat more and more. Something must be wrong. Umm, maybe that is what biases me now. I am just blaming it on diet soda, instead of blaming myself for not working, watching lots of TV, and sleeping all the time.

By the way, the study was published in Circulation, one of the most prestigious journal. The study populaion came from a well-known prospective cohort for cardiovascular disease. The authors are also from one of the best school of public health in the world. I think I will be just waiting for responses and commentary.

Election Center 2008: Delegate Scorecard - Elections & Politics news from CNN.com: "RESULTS: Democrats | Republicans"

Sexist vs Racist! If I could vote for president, it would be Obama vs. Clinton. Forget McCain!
Primary election hasn't ended yet, but it looks like Clinton will win. At the moment the number of pledged delegates are 625 vs 624 for Clinton and Obama, respectively. Somehow, there are "Superdelegates" for the democrate party! What the $#@!!@#$ Well, if Clinton were to be nominated, I would have to vote for McCain! Am I a sexist? Probably not, but I'd rather not vote for Clinton even if I could.
"Definition of Snow Types"

The following are standard definitions of snow types and their associated abbreviations.

Powder-PDR: Cold, new, loose, fluffy, flaky and dry snow which has not been compacted.

Packed Powder-PP: Powder snow, either natural or machine made, that has been packed down by skier traffic or grooming machines. The snow is no longer fluffy, but is not so extremely compacted that it is hard.

Hard Pack-HP: When natural or machine made snow becomes very firmly packed. The snow has never melted and re-crystallized, but it's been tightly compressed through grooming and continuous wind exposure. You can plant a pole in hard packed snow, but it takes more effort than packed powder.

Machine Groomed Snow-MGS: Loose granular snow that has been repeatedly groomed by power tillers so that the texture is halfway between LSGR & PP. Some of the snow is granular & has been so pulverized that the crystals are like powder sugar. It's neither LSGR or PP.

Wet Snow-WETSN: Powder or packed powder snow that has become moist due to a thaw or rainfall, or snow which was moist when it fell.

Wet packed Snow-WPS: Natural or machine made snow that has been previously packed and becomes wet usually because of rainfall.

Loose Granular-LSGR: This surface results after powder or packed powder thaws, then refreezes and recrystalizes, or from an accumulation of sleet. This is also created by machine grooming of frozen or icy snow.

Frozen Granular-FRGR: This is undoubtedly the most misunderstood surface condition in ski reporting. It is defined as a hard surface of old snow formed by granules freezing together after rain or warm temperatures. Frozen granular will support a ski pole stuck into its surface while ice will chip away and not support a pole.

Wet Granular-WETGR: Loose or frozen granular snow which becomes wet after rainfall or high temperatures.

Icy-ICE: Not to be confused with frozen granular, ice is a hard, glazed surface created either by freezing rain, ground water seeping up into the snow and freezing or by the rapid freezing of snow saturated with water from rain or melting. Ice will chip away and not support a ski pole when stuck into it.

Variable Conditions-VC: When no primary surface (70%) can be determined, variable conditions describe a range of surfaces that a skier may encounter. Parts of trails can be Loose Granular, partly Packed Powder, and parts Frozen Granular, for example.

Corn Snow-CORN: Usually found in the spring, Corn Snow is characterized by large, loose granules during the day, which freeze together at night, then warm up again and loosen during the day.

Spring Conditions-SC: This is the spring version of Variable Conditions. It is used when no one surface can describe 70% or more of the terrain open for skiers.

Windblown Snow-WBLN: Powder or granular snow which has been blown by wind into forming a base.
